This website goes to great lengths to compare their product quality to automobiles. It was indicated that unless otherwise noted you could expect their products to be a step down from Ferrari's and perhaps something along the lines of a BMW. Definitely not the case here.
I would argue that a Yugo has a better construction quality than this bench. The holes for the pins looked like they were drilled by monkeys without opposible thumbs. None were plumb with the wood and as a result the receiving holes had to be seriously over drilled by the manufacturer. Even then, assembly was extremely difficult as even though over drilled, they weren't over drilled enough.
Would I buy from them again? Perhaps, but only because I have reasonable woodworking skills. Would highly recommend those who do not spend the extra money for teak furniture manufactured with a higher grade of construction. Otherwise prepare to be frustrated.
TEAK CLOSEOUTS RESPONSE When we discuss automobiles we are simply referring to teak wood in general and not construction quality. The Sumo bench is a handmade bench by top monkey's in the field. This is a relatively inexpensive price point on a substantial bench. A bench with a-grade teak and full machine construction would cost in excess of $1000 in a bench of similar size. It is disappointing that we have not met the customer's expectations and we have failed to properly "relay" what is being purchased. And we would have gladly refunded the full purchase price + all shipping charges had the customer contacted us for a return. Yet, our reviews are real and unmodified. We encourage truthful customer reviews.
NOTE ON ASSEMBLY We aren't exactly sure what all the over-drilling comments are about. Every item on our website is fully assembled and then boxed. The customer seems to imply he applied some woodworking skills to the assembly. It is 6 screws in 6 holes. Unless he mixed the arms, the assembly should have been easier. The bench was fully assembled before packing - so we know it went together without any further drilling. Ultimately, we think the issue revolves around the PIN and SCREW assembly. The customer preferred or expected a different or higher quality assembly method. In actuality, we get more complaints on better constructed mortise and tendon doweled assembly than we do pin and screw. Our customers just find the later assembly easier and less cumbersome. We get various buys from different manufactures.
